Maryland Stuns No. 20 Clemson In Death Valley, 20-17

Associated Press

CLEMSON, S.C. -- Thoroughly dominated for a half, Maryland needed a special play to steal momentum from No. 20 Clemson.

Who else to call on than perhaps the Terps' most special player, Darrius Heyward-Bey.

With the Maryland (4-1, 1-0 Atlantic Coast Conference) down 17-6, the former high-school track star took off on a 76-yard reverse that set up the first of two second-half TDs in a 20-17 win Saturday.

"I just remember, 'Just run,'" Heyward-Bey said, smiling.

On 1st-and-10 from Maryland's 20, Heyward-Bey ran around an open right side, cutting back through the middle of the field to the left sideline. By the time he was forced out by Clemson safety Michael Hamlin, Heyward-Bey was on the Tigers 4.

"I wanted to score, but I put my team in position to score," he said.

Two plays later, Chris Turner found Torrey Smith on a 6-yard touchdown pass to close the gap and fire up his teammates.

Maryland vs Eastern Michigan (51-24) victory with Highlights

Associated Press

COLLEGE PARK, Md. -- Wide receiver Darrius Heyward-Bey caught a 32-yard touchdown pass and ran twice for 81 yards, part of a prolific offensive showing that carried Maryland past Eastern Michigan 51-24 on Saturday.

Morgan Green ran for two touchdowns and Chris Turner threw for 212 yards and two TDs for the Terrapins (3-1), who scored on nine of their 13 possessions.

Kyle McMahon completed 25 of 37 passes for 278 yards and two touchdowns for the Eagles. But Eastern Michigan (1-3), which had lost its previous three games against Maryland by a combined 132-19 score, was let down by a defense that forced only one punt and yielded 486 yards.

Heyward-Bey had runs of 35 and 46 yards, each of which set up a touchdown. He finished as the second-leading rusher for Maryland. Despite playing without injured Da'Rel Scott, who is averaging 135.7 yards on the ground, the Terrapins finished with 231 yards rushing.

Maryland Upsets No. 23 California

COLLEGE PARK, Md. -- For three quarters, California appeared to be sleepwalking against Maryland.

That's what happens when you have a noon kickoff, which translates to an ungodly 9 a.m. on the West Coast.

Maryland scored touchdowns on its first three possessions Saturday en route to a stunning 35-27 upset of No. 23 California. The Golden Bears didn't reach the end zone until the closing minutes, and by then it was far too late.

"We weren't ready to start the game," said Cal quarterback Kevin Riley, who made up for his team's surprisingly ineffective running attack by going 33-for-58 for 423 yards and three scores. The 58 passes were a school record.
