Big Papi's dad flew into town to tell his son, hey kid, it can't get any worse right now, so just have fun. The fatherly encouragement seemed to work as David Ortiz hit one of the 4 homers that the Red Sox sent over the fences in a 6 run 5th inning. Papi said he felt like the "monkey was off his back" as he snapped his longest homerless hitting streak at 150 at-bats. Jason Varitek, Mike Lowell, and Jason Bay also hit HRs for Boston as they soundly beat Toronto 8-3.

Jason Bay took another star closer deep, hitting a three-run homer in the ninth inning off Wood as the Boston Red Sox won their 11th straight, 3-1 over the Cleveland Indians on Monday night.

"The guy throws like 100 miles an hour," Bay said. "You have to put it your mind to try and hit a mistake. I got a fastball up over the plate, and I didn't miss it."

Cleveland's Cliff Lee and Boston knuckleballer Tim Wakefield matched strikes and zeros for seven innings. Manager Terry Francona pulled the right-hander to start the eighth for Manny Delcarmen (1-0). Kerry Wood (0-1) got the loss.

Nomar helps A's defeat BoSox

Nomar faced his old team for the first time and thought it was kind of funny to see Jason Varitek crouched behind home plate. The situation didn't phase Garciaparra, though. He and Jack Cust each homered, and Jason Giambi and Matt Holliday both drove in two runs as the Oakland Athletics beat the Boston Red Sox 8-2 Monday night for their first home win of the season.
Nomar gave the A's a 6-1 lead with his fifth-inning home run. Dallas Braden (1-1) pitched six solid innings and the Athletics ended a three-game losing skid.
Kevin Youkilis hit a home run and doubled for the Red Sox, who lost their fifth in six games. David Ortiz also drove in a run for Boston, which is off to its worst start since opening 2-12 in 1996.
Jon Lester (0-2) allowed six runs and 10 hits. He struck out five and did not walk a batter.
