North Carolina Holds Off Boston College, Gets 6th Win

Associated Press

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. -- Hakeem Nicks just knew he was going to have a big game. North Carolina didn't need much else to become bowl-eligible for the first time in four years.

Nicks had three second-quarter touchdown catches and ran for a score in the fourth to help the Tar Heels beat Boston College 45-24 on Saturday, bouncing back from last week's road loss with what coach Butch Davis called "the most complete team game we've probably played" in his two seasons here.

Trimane Goddard added an interception return for a touchdown for the Tar Heels (6-2, 2-2 Atlantic Coast Conference), who fell behind 10-0 in the first quarter before roaring back.

The Tar Heels also got a short touchdown run from Ryan Houston after a long interception return by Kendric Burney, who had two of the team's three picks of BC quarterback Chris Crane.

Everything started with Nicks, who provided the big-play threat missing since receiver Brandon Tate suffered a season-ending knee injury this month. He finished with eight catches for 139 yards -- 127 coming in a 24-point second quarter -- and 31 yards rushing, proving to be a matchup the Eagles (5-2, 2-2) had no answer for all day.

Butch Davis Beats Former Team As Heels Top Canes, 28-24

MIAMI -- Cameron Sexton threw a 14-yard touchdown pass to Brooks Foster with 46 seconds left, Trimane Goddard had two interceptions in the final minutes, and North Carolina rallied from an early 14-point deficit to beat Miami 28-24 on Saturday.

After struggling in the first three quarters in place of injured starter T.J. Yates, UNC backup QB Cameron Sexton came up big to rally the Tar Heels in the fourth quarter against Miami.

Sexton -- playing because North Carolina starter T.J. Yates will miss six weeks with a broken left ankle -- relieved starter Mike Paulus early and completed 11 of 19 passes for 242 yards, including two fourth-quarter scores.

He found Hakeem Nicks with a 74-yard pass with 9 minutes remaining, then coolly found Foster in the right corner of the end zone in the final minute to give North Carolina (3-1, 1-1 Atlantic Coast Conference) its first lead of the day.

Miami had one more chance, getting the ball at its own 31. Robert Marve found Kayne Farquharson for a 29-yard gain that took the Hurricanes to the North Carolina 20 with 15 seconds remaining.

Marve nearly hooked up with Farquharson again on the final play of the game, but Goddard's second pick of the quarter sealed the Tar Heels' win. Farquharson had his hands on the ball in the end zone, yet Goddard was the one who wound up with possession.

North Carolina Wins Big Over Rutgers, 44-12

Associated Press

PISCATAWAY, N.J. -- Butch Davis has North Carolina back on the road to respectability.

T.J. Yates threw three touchdown passes and the Tar Heels won for the first time outside North Carolina since 2002, beating error-prone Rutgers 44-12 in a nationally televised game that pitted Davis against his former pupil, Greg Schiano.

Yates found a wide-open Hakeem Nicks on touchdown passes of 9 and 11 yards and connected on a 69-yard scoring play with speedster Brandon Tate, who also scored on a 12-yard end around.

"You're going to see a whole lot that's changed," said Tate, who caught four passes for a career-best 138 yards. "We could go anywhere and win any game now, so everybody just has to stay focused, stay humble after the win. This win was big, nobody can take us as a joke anymore because we're gonna come in and play hard."
