The story behind the fight, which occured in a playoff game between Industriales (in blue) and Sancti Spiritus, comes to us via BaseballDeCuba.com. It seems Industriales catcher Lisvan Correia took offense to getting brushed back and then hit by a pitch by Yaniel Sosa in the ninth inning of a game that Industriales was losing 8-1. Perhaps there was more of a history between the players that goes unreported, but it does seem like a bit of an overreaction.

There are dueling allegations of police attacking Industriales players and vice versa, but the fallout is that Correia has been suspended for six months and Industriales came back to win the series and eliminate Sancti Spiritus. Correia wasn't on the field for the victory, but he does seem to have inspired his team.

The other lasting legacy of the brawl may be a better understanding of why so many Cuban pitchers have risked life and limb to get to this country. Pitching inside on these shores is a lot less likely to wind up with a bat crushing your skull, something that should make Aroldis Chapman a happy man indeed. (mlb.fanhouse.com)

A futsal soccer player died in Brazil after a piece of the court's wooden floor pierced his abdomen. It looked as if the 23-year old player was fully alert and well as he was being strapped to the gurney, but died of hemorrhagic shock a day after the game.
Robson Rocha Costa made a slide tackle near the goal line. Apparently, a piece of the surface hit his thigh and went up into his intestines. He was immediately rushed to the hospital where he had surgery to fix the problems, but he succumbed to the injuries a day later.
